The Selection of Han Shan Poems (3)

By Han Shan (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

Finding Joy in the Way I Live my Life

My lifelong path brings quiet cheer,

Where vines and caves veil mountain sheer.

My wild heart roams unconfined,

With white clouds I leave all cares behind.

Paths lead to no mundane strand,

A heart without desire can stand.

On stone bed I sit alone at night,

Full moon climbs Cold Mountains height.

Once Settled in the Cold Mountain, All Worries Cease

Once I dwell on Cold Mountain, all strife fades away,

No tangled thoughts linger to trouble my heart each day.

I scrawl short verses on stone walls at my free will,

Drift with fate like boats unbound, serene and still.

Among the Cliffs I Choose my Dwelling

I build my home on the layered-crags space,

No man's track, only bird trails thread the place.

What fills my yard?—behold the zone,

White clouds enfold the rugged stones.

Years slip by within this quiet ground,

Spring blooms and winter frost around.

To lords with bronze tripods and rank I say:

Empty fame can bring no lasting good each day.

The Cold Mountain Abounds in Secluded Wonders

Cold Mountain holds strange hidden grace,

All climbers pause with amazed faces.

Moonlight streams oer clear waters bed,

Wind sweeps grass blades with rustling tread.

Withered plums turn snow-white bloom,

Bare boughs wear clouds as leafy plume.

Rain revives all things in vivid light,

No trail to tread till clear skies shine bright.

Dwelling under the Frosty Crag

I dwell beneath cold crag arms,

Marvel at all their hidden charms.

I carry baskets for wild herbs fine,

Carry cages full of ripe fruit to dine.

I spread dry grass to sit alone,

Pecking and sipping the purple lingzhi known.

Wash gourd and bowl in clear marsh pool,

Boil herbs to broth, thin or thick in rule.

Wrapped in rough cloak beneath warm sun,

I read old sages’ poems till day is done.

The No-Leakage Crag on Cold Mountain

Cold Mountains flawless rock stands tall,

A firm refuge through rise and fall.

Eight winds cannot shake its steady frame,

Its timeless wonder men acclaim.

Silent abode for tranquil rest,

Empty mind escapes all scorn and jest.

Lonely moon glows through endless night,

Bright sun pours down its warm clear light.

Tiger Hill, Tiger Stream far off apart,

I need not summon them to my heart.

The world has lords with rank and fame,

None match Zhou and Shao’s virtuous name.

I hide alone on cold stone crest,

Sing and laugh with unburdened chest.

Note: Zen "Eight Winds": gain, decline, slander, praise, compliment, scorn, pain, joy.

Cold Mountain, Cold, Ice Locks Stone (Excerpt from a Three-Word Gatha)

Cold Mountain chills, ice locks stone,

Green peaks concealed, white snow shown.

Sun rises high, all frozen melts away,

Warmth arrives to cradle the elder’s stay.

Clear Water Flows in the Emerald Ravine

Clear brook springs glisten blue and clean,

Cold Mountain's moon sheds silver sheen.

In silent calm my spirit clears,

Gazing on void, all stillness nears.

Heat Mirage, Blossoms in Empty Air

Heat mirages bloom in empty sky like flame,

All mortal things are empty, mere empty claim.

When one awakes from mortal dream,

All worldly cares are cast astream.

All Beings Are often Ignorant

All mortal folk dwell in blind delusion,

Take fleeting illusions for truth's fusion.

They crave brief joys before their eyes,

Ignore the karmic ties that rise.

Fierce Winds Shake Tall Trees

Wild tempests shake the tall old tree,

Yet steady roots keep it free.

If heart forsakes both fame and shame,

No grief or fear can cling andclaim.

The Three Realms Are Entangled in Discord

Three realms churn with restless maze,

All mortals chase vain gain all days.

Far better dwell in quiet place,

Sit still, forget all worldly trace.

Note: The Three Realms: Realm of Desire, Realm of Form, Realm of Formlessness.

Originally There Is Nothing

No thing exists from very start,

Why rush and toil with troubled heart?

When mind grows pure, all dust fades by,

Empty hills hold sun and moon high.
