Farewell to Yuan the Second on His Mission to Anxi

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

At dusk I latch my wicket door.

When spring grass turns green, will my heart

See my dear recluse come once more?

A Toast at Parting

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

I dismount, pour wine and bid you stay;

Where does your wandering pathway stray?

You say your hopes have all run low,

To South Peaks foot your rest to know.

Go forth, no more my questions bide;

White clouds stretch far, no end beside.

To Prefect Li Bound for Zizhou

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

A thousand gorges rear their trees to sky;

A thousand hills with cuckoo cries reply.

One night of rain within the mountain fold

A hundred springs from treetops drip in gold.

Shu girls weave ramie for the tribute load;

Ba farmers wrangle over taro ground.

Yet Wenweng taughtwe dare not rest on old,

But make new virtue where old sages frowned.

Bidding Zhang Wu Return to Hills

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

To see you gowhat grief I hold!

Whom else shall I escort, grown old?

We walked hand in hand for days,

Now you cast off your robes of praise.

East Hilla thatched hut waits for you;

Sweep wide its briar gate, I pray.

I too shall quit my post one day

Why should true will be never true?

To Magistrate Yang Exiled to Chenzhou

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

By dawn youll see Mount Heng and Dongtings tide

How bear the gibbons moan when moons are bright?

I dread the southern breeze that blows too light;

I grieve the distant isles where waters glide.

Through summer miasma youll cross Xiakous strait;

Through white-capped waves youll leave Pengchengs gate.

But Changsha keeps no talent long in chains

Why should you mourn as Jia Yi mourned his pains?

On High Terrace, Bidding Censor Li Farewell

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

The plains stretch dim, no end in show.

At dusk birds hurry home to rest;

But the traveler leaves, never to arrest.

To My Cousin Fan, Bound for Huainan

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

He pores oer texts, yet masters bow and spear;

With sword at side, to Huaiyin he steers.

The youthful gallants of Huaiyins shore,

Will travel thousand li his steps to explore.

His noble virtue cannot lie concealed;

In bright reigns none in lowly depths shall yield.

Barbarian isles beyond our realm extend;

Fairy springs lie deep where three peaks bend.

He hoists his sail to chastise rebel bands;

All clad in grass robes fall beneath his hands.

When home he comes to greet the sovereigns throne,

Rank and bright gold shall be his rightful loan.

Then sudden yearning for perch slices rise,

A longing for green marshlands fills his eyes.

When cold winds sweep the reed-fringed river shore,

Dawn light lays bare Yunmengs wooded floor.

Maple leaves drift down the river towns height;

Autumn mallets ring through Huais soft twilight.

I send him forth outside Green Gates frame;

His horse and cart rush fast, away they claim.

I grieve beneath Xinfengs leaf-laden tree;

Only wild birds drift far where heavens are free.

Bidding Master Shen Zifu Back to Jiangdong

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

By the willow ferry few wayfarers stay;

The boatman pulls his oars toward Linqis bay.

My longing, like springs color, spreads so wide

South and north of the River, it attends your tide.

To Qiwu Qian, Returning Home After Failing the Exam

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

This blessed age lets no wise hermit hide;

All gifted souls to court’s bright gates abide.

Thus you, East Hill’s recluse, may not go gather fern,

Though far the golden gate, your path you need not spurn.

You’ll cross Huai and Yangtze through Cold Food’s mild air;

Sew springtime robes within Chang’an’s town square.

I pour wine by the capital’s dusty way;

A heart once knit now wanders far away.

Soon you’ll float on cassia boat’s soft sweep,

Ere long you’ll brush your wicket gate in sleep.

Tall distant trees enfold your lonely form;

One lone town meets the sunset’s glowing charm.

Our schemes were spurned, yet grieve not deep within;

Think not no kindred soul shall know your tune.

To Qiu Wei, Bound for Jiangdong After Exam Failure

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

I pity you whose hopes are low,

And willow-tendrils sting with spring.

Your gold is spent, your hair turns snow —

A lone man homeward wandering.

Three acres by the Five Lakes stand;

Ten thousand li — one traveler’s track.

I know your worth — but powerless hand —

As court advisor, shame draws back.

Bidding Xing Farewell to Guizhou

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

Drums and horns clamor by Jingkous shore;

Through wind and wave you sail to Dongtings floor.

Past Ochre Mound and Red Banks sandy side,

You strike the foam and let your galleon glide.

Sunset turns river-lake to milky white;

Tide-rise dyes heaven-earth in azure light.

The pearl returns to Hepus ancient strand

You ride the star of envoy, sea and land.

To Commander Zhao Marching to Dai Prefecture

By Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)

Translated by Wang Yongli

The Generals Star stirs in heavens hall;

By Hans green river willows fall.

For miles the watch-drums warning cries;

Three armies march through Jingxings rise.

You leave the Phoenix Tower, fearless, bold,

To seize the Dragon Courta warriors hold.

Why be like scholars, pale and tame,

Who age by windows oer one ancient name?
